A fire may have kept us from our destination this weekend, but it didn’t keep us from having fun.
Heather let me go on my annual fishing trip with the guys this weekend. We always go up to Little Naches to camp and fish. However, this time, we didn’t have a snowball’s chance in a forest fire. And that, literally, is what kept us out. About two hours from reaching Little Naches, a forest fire had started around Raven’s Roost, and they were kicking people out and not letting anyone in, including us.
We hung around the blockade for about a half hour or so waiting for Dave’s dad, George, to arrive. When he didn’t, we figured we’d run down to Whistlin’ Jack Lodge to find cell phone coverage and hopefully George. Turns out we didn’t need a cell phone, because George was there waiting for us. The officer was sending everyone there, except for the three of us, so we had no clue he’d be there. Good thing we left when we did, because George was about to head home.
On a tip we received from the officer, we headed west past Little Naches toward Bumping Lake. On the way up, there was a turn-out with a camping spot that wasn’t a pay site. It couldn’t have been better I think. It was mostly private, and it was only one spot, so we had it all to ourselves.
It really was a nice weekend; the weather was great, the river was almost warm, and there were plenty of good spots on the river to find fish. The only disappointment was the burn ban that had taken affect the evening before we arrived. So no wieners or smores for us. We did pretty well though.
Two nights and two days of no email, no cell phone and no distractions was a welcome break. Hopefully it’s not a full year before we get to do that again.
Heather had some fun too, although she hasn’t told me the whole story. Then again, I haven’t told her absolutely everything we did either. She hung out with Kristin and Tasha most of the weekend - just the girls and one little boy, who I’m sure enjoyed the attention.
